COMMENTS
The World Indoor Football League (WIFL) began play in 2007, based in the Southeastern US (Georgia and Florida). It is comprised of four teams, two formerly of the AIFL (now AIFA), the Augusta Spartans & Daytona Beach Thunder, one former NIFL team, the Osceola Ghostriders, and one "new" franchise, the Columbus Lions.
The league was originally founded by Rome Renegades and Raleigh Rebels owner Harry Pierce when he broke away from the AIFA following the 2006 season. The Rebels were to be renamed the Carolina Bombers. However, Pierce was forced to fold both his teams in October, 2006, long before the WIFL played it's first game.
The two teams Pierce convinced to leave the AIFA with him, the Thunder and Spartans, carried on and worked on recruiting other teams to join them in the WIFL. The AIFA's Huntington Heroes announced a move to the WIFL but decided to stay put at the last minute. The NIFL's Osceola Ghostriders and Charleston Sandsharks also announced their move to the WIFL. The Sandsharks, who also announced a move to the AIFA at one point, would fold prior to the start of the season. The AIFA's Chattahoochee Valley Vipers, who had their arena lease revoked following the 2006 season, reorganized as a new team, the Columbus Lions and joined their former rivals.
The WIFL began play in February, 2007. The Thunder and Lions inaugral meeting was mared by tragedy when Thunder DB, Javan Camon, died as a result of injuries received during a helmet-to-helmet collision late in the game.
