I wrote in some time ago regarding the accuracy of the Jacksonville Express (WFL) helmet image posted on the site, and the mini helmets and replica helmets produced by Riddell. I was an Express season ticket holder, and my recollection was that the logo was the same color as the helmet (kind of a yellow-orange) rather than white as shown on the helmets produced now. The game programs were of little help as they contained only black-and-white photos. Thanks to my friends at the WFL Club, I finally have conclusive proof that there was no white logo on the helmet. I am in the process of contacting Riddell to see if they will correct the inaccuracy of the helmets they are currently producing (the main reason I haven't bought one).

Here are links to the photos, one of QB George Mira and one of QB David Fowler. Both photos are conclusive. In both shots you can clearly see the outline of the helmet logo, which is plainly helmet colored.
Here are links to the photos:

Mira:

Fowler:

You have to log in to Yahoo to see these. If you have problems seeing them, I will try to copy them to my computer and send them directly.

Here is the text of a letter I sent to Riddell, Inc. regarding the Express helmets. I tried calling their customer service line, but I was transferred three times and finally wound up with the voice mail of a woman who was out of the office and never returned my call. The photos I attached were printed versions of the ones I linked to here.

Gentlemen:

I am writing regarding an inaccuracy in the replica helmets and mini-helmets you are currently producing of the World Football League’s Jacksonville Express. I was an Express season ticket holder in 1975, and my recollection was that the logo on the helmet was the same color as the helmet rather than white as in your reproduction. Until recently I was unable to prove it, since the Express game programs had no color photography in them. Thanks to my friends at the WFL Club, I have conclusive proof that there was no white logo on the helmets. I have attached photographs of Express quarterbacks George Mira and David Fowler in pre-game warm-ups in full uniform. You can clearly see that the helmet and the logo are the same color, and there was no white on the helmet. I also noticed in a promotional photograph of your replica helmet that on the right side the train points toward the back of the helmet. This is also inaccurate. The logos on both sides were mirror images of one another, pointing toward the front.

I respectfully request that you correct these inaccuracies. Once you do, I will buy one of the mini helmets. I am one of a small handful of people working to preserve the memory of the World Football League, and accurate representation is part of that effort.

I got a call from Riddell's corporate office. They said that it isn't them who produces the WFL mini helmets. The search goes on. At least I got a reply.

Looks like a dead end. After getting the phone call from Riddell, I contacted an online merchant who is selling WFL helmets. I thought it curious that the only one they had for sale was Portland Storm. I asked them who manufactures the helmets. The reply was that the company who produced WFL mini helmets has gone out of business, and currently no one has a license to produce them.

JaxWFLFan,

I tried to get access to this WFL club but had no luck.

Can you e-mail me the photos at: k@klaus2.com ?

I thought for sure that the football shaped oval logo on the Jacksonville Express helmet was definitely white!

I have a tape of the WFL treasures often seen on ESPN classics that I am going to try and watch this weekend and do some of my own research.

I used to also have a program or 2 of the Express and yes, photos were in B&W but I thought for sure that the logo was white!

Anyway, thanks for a GREAT post!

K
