HISTORICAL HELMETS
BARCELONA DRAGONS
![]() |
|---|
| 1995 - 2003 |
The Dragons were a part of the original World League of American Football, and a founding member of NFL-Europe. Unfortunately, declining support for the team over the years left them on shaky ground financially. The team folded after the 2003 season. They were soon replaced by the Cologne Centurions.
BERLIN THUNDER
![]() |
|---|
| 1999 |
The Thunder replaced the Monarchs (see below), who folded in 1998. The only difference between the original helmet and the current one is the placement of the hammer logo.
ENGLAND MONARCHS

Another WLAF founding member, the team was known as the London Monarchs prior to 1998. They were replaced by the Berlin Thunder following the 1998 season.
SCOTLAND CLAYMORES

| 1995 - 2004 |
The Claymores entered the league when it became exclusively European-based in 1995. They folded following the 2004 season and were replaced by the Hamburg Sea Devils.
COMMENTS
This league is based in Europe and operates as something of a farm league for the NFL. NFL teams can officially allocate young players to NFL Europe so they can get extra experience. The remainder of team rosters are made up of players who didn't quite make the cut in NFL training camps, undrafted free agents and European players, all hoping to get noticed. The league plays a Spring schedule culminating in the World Bowl.
NFL Europe is descended from the World League of American Football, which included teams in the US, Canada and Europe, but lasted for just two seasons in 1991-1992. The league was brought back as an exclusively European league in 1995 with three teams from the old WLAF (Barcelona, Frankfurt and London) and three new teams. The Berlin Thunder were added in 1999 to replace the England Monarchs, which folded the prior year. The Barcelona Dragons folded after the 2003 season and were replaced by the Cologne Centurions. The Scotland Claymores left in 2004 and have been replaced by the Hamburg Sea Devils. Some fans joke that soon the league will will have to change it's name to NFL-Germany.
I'm confident that this is a complete set of helmets for the league, with only Berlin making minor changes following their first season.
