Above is the 2007 season alignment for Af2. Much has happened since last season. The Macon Knights and Memphis Xplorers have folded and the San Diego Riptide, who were listed as "inactive" last season seem to be gone for good as well.

The league has added several new teams to take their place. The Texas Copperheads and Tri-Cities Fever join the Af2 after leaving the NIFL. The Laredo Lobos move over from the Intense Football League. Brand new franchises include the Boise Burn, Mahoning Valley Thunder, Cincinnati Jungle Kats, Fort Wayne Fusion, Lubbock Renegades and Corpus Christ Sharks.

The Birmingham Steeldogs have changed their name to the Alabama Steeldogs and have adjusted their helmet accordingly. The South Georgia Wildcats have also changed helmets this season. The Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings tweaked their logo and may change their helmet to match. The Wilkes-Barre Scranton Pioneers and Tennessee Valley Vipers are changing their look for 2007 as well.

According to many sources, the league plans to add a team in Albuquergue, NM, in 2008 and is still looking for a home for the former Columbus (GA) Wardogs team. The team's plan to play in Biloxi, MS, were derailed by Hurricane Katrina.

HISTORICAL TEAMS

ALABAMA STEELDOGS / BIRMINGHAM STEELDOGS

2000 - 2005 2006 2007- present

The Steeldogs play their home games in Birmingham, AL.

ALBANY CONQUEST

2002 - present

The Conquest play their home games in Albany, NY.

AMARILLO DUSTERS

2005 2006 - present

The Dusters play their home games in Amarillo, TX. They joined the league for the 2005 season, coming over from the Intense Football League. Their depature had such an impact the IFL was forced into hiatus for a season before coming back in 2006.

In the 2005 version of the helmet above, the logo may have been reversed, facing the back of the helmet instead of the front as I have it. Any confirmation of this would be appreciated.

ARKANSAS TWISTERS

2000 - 01 2002 - 2005 2006 - present

The Twisters play their home games in Little Rock, AK.

AUGUSTA STALLIONS

2000 - 2002

The Stallions played their home games in Augusta, GA.

BAKERSFIELD BLITZ

2002 - 2003 2004 - present

The Blitz play their home games in Bakersfield, CA.

The 2004 Blitz team is technically a new franchise. The original Blitz team now play as the Central Valley Coyotes. Since their inception, the team has worn their logo on only the right side of the helmet. The 2004 helmet has silver player numbers on the left side. The original helmet was blank on the left side.

BATON ROUGE BLAZE

2001

The Blaze played their home games in Baton Rouge, LA.

BOISE BURN

pre 2007 2007 - present

The Burn play their home games in Boise, ID. The first helmet above, shown at a press conference announcing the team's identity, was noticablely lighter then the helmet used in games. I add it here as a prototype.

BOSSIER-SHREVEPORT BATTLE WINGS

2001 - 02 2003 2004 - 2006
2007 - present

The Battle Wings play their home games in Bossier City, LA. In fact, from 2001 until 2003, the team played as the Bossier City Battle Wings.

CAROLINA RHINOS

2000 - 2002

The Rhinos played their home games in Greenville, SC.

There may have been a version of this helmet used without stripes. Any help in tracking this down would be much appreciated.

CENTRAL VALLEY COYOTES

2004 - present

The Coyotes play their home games in Fresno, CA. The team is actually the transplanted Bakersfield Blitz. Their owner moved the team to Fresno and changed their name, while the Af2 established a "new" Blitz franchise in Bakersfield.

CHARLESTON SWAMP FOXES

2000 - 2001 2002 2003

The Swamp Foxes played their home games in Charleston, SC.

CINCINNATI JUNGLE KATS

2007 - present

The Jungle Kats play their home games in Cincinnati, OH. They wore the helmet above for at least the first game of the season. If a logo is added, I'll update.

CINCINNATI SWARM

2003

The Swarm played their home games in Cincinnati, OH. Unable to secure a lease for 2004, the team was forced to fold after a single season.

COLUMBUS WARDOGS

2001 - 2002 2003 2004

The Wardogs played their home games in Columbus, GA. Apparently the team was to move to Biloxi, MS, perhaps to play as the Mississippi Headhunters in 2006, but the plan was put on hold after Hurricane Katrina devestated the area.

CORPUS CHRISTI SHARKS

2007 - present

The Sharks will play their home games in Corpus Christi, TX. There already is an indoor team based in the area, the Corpus Christi Hammerheads. I don't know how both teams plan to co-exist.

EVERETT HAWKS

2006 - present

The Hawks play their home games in Evertt, WA. The team played in the NIFL in 2005.

FLORIDA FIRECATS

2001 - present

The Firecats play their home games in Naples, FL.

FORT WAYNE FUSION

2007 - present

The Fusion will play their home games in Fort Wayne, IN. I believe the team is in someway related to the Fort Wayne Freedom, who played in the NIFL and later the UIF, before folding in 2006.

FRESNO FRENZY

2002

The Frenzy played their home games in Fresno, CA.

GREEN BAY BLIZZARD

2003 2004 - present

The Blizzard play their home games in Green Bay, WI. There are apparently some other variations to the helmets above. I'll try and add them soon.

GREENSBORO PROWLERS

2000 2001 - 2002 2003

The Prowlers played their home games in Greensboro, NC.

In 2000, the Prowlers may have worn a helmet with a black facemask. Any help in tracking it down would be much appreciated.

HAWAIIAN ISLANDERS

2002 2003 - 2004

The Islanders played their home games in Honolulu, HI.

IOWA BARNSTORMERS

2001

The Barnstormers played their home games in Des Moines, IA. This team was established after the Arena league team of the same name moved to New York and became the Dragons. The fans were less than supportive of their "replacement", and the team folded after a year.

There are persistant rumors that the Barnstormers will make a return to the league, perhaps as soon as 2008. There is also the possibility that they will come back to the AFL proper instead.

JACKSONVILLE TOMCATS

2000 - 2002

The Tomcats played their home games in Jacksonville, FL.

There are rumors that the city will get either another AF2 or even an AFL franchise soon.

LAFAYETTE ROUGHNECKS

2001

The Roughnecks played their home games in Lafayette, LA.

LAREDO LAW

2004

The Law played their home games in Laredo, TX.

Supposedly the team went on hiatus for 2005 and planned to return in 2006. However, in my experience teams that "take a break" like the Law rarely ever return. It would appear that my suspicisions are true as the Laredo Lobos announced they were joining the league in 2007.

LAREDO LOBOS

2007 - present

The Lobos play their home games in Laredo, TX. The team played in the Intense Football League in 2006.

LINCOLN LIGHTNING

2001

The lightning played their home games in Lincoln, NE.

The Lightning were one of two teams to rise from the ashes of the IFL after the AF2 put them out of business. The team left the AF2 after one season and became the Lincoln Capitols of the NIFL.

LOUISVILLE FIRE

2001 - present

The Fire play their home games in Louisville, KY.

LUBBOCK RENEGADES

2007 - present

The Renegades will play their home games in Lubbock, TX. They may be related in some way to the Lubbock Lone Stars / Gunslingers, an indoor team that played in the Intense Football League and later the NIFL.

MACON KNIGHTS

2001 - 2002 2003 2004 - 2006

The Knights played their home games in Macon, GA.

MEMPHIS XPLORERS

2001 2002 (?) 2003 - 2006

The Xplorers played their home games in Memphis, TN. Despite recent success on the field, the team folded following the 2006 season.

I know for a fact that the first helmet above was used. There may have been a second logo design in 2002 with a Conquistador on a horse above the script, like the second helmet above. Any help in verifying this would be much appreciated.

MOBILE WIZARDS

2002

The Wizards played their home games in Mobile, AL.

MAHONING VALLEY THUNDER

2007 - present

The Thunder play their home games in Youngstown, OH.

MOHEGAN / MANCHESTER WOLVES

2002 2003 - present

The Wolves originally played their home games in Mohegan, CT. They moved to Manchester, NH, following the 2003 season.

NEW HAVEN NINJAS

2002

The Ninjas played their home games in New Haven, CT.

NORFOLK NIGHTHAWKS

2000 - 2001 2002 - 2003

The Nighthawks played their home games in Norfolk, VA.

OKLAHOMA CITY YARD DAWGZ

2004 - present

The Yard Dawgz play their home games in Oklahoma City, OK.

PENSACOLA BARRACUDAS

2000 - 2002

The Barracudas played their home games in Pensacola, FL. Despite what some mini-helmets look like, the helmet above was the only one ever worn by the team.

PEORIA PIRATES

2001 2002 - 2003 2004

The Pirates played their home games in Peoria, IL. The Pirates were the second team to come over from the IFL. They were much more successful than the Lightning, winning the championship in 2002.

For the 2004 season, the Pirates went gone back to their original IFL logo. The center stripe on their helmets may have been light gray rather than white. It's difficult to tell from the photos I've seen.

The Pirates left the league following the 2004 season to play in the newly formed UIF as the Rough Riders. There are persistant rumors that a new Pirates team will surface in Peoria as early as 2008.

QUAD CITY STEAMWHEELERS

2000 - present

The Steamwheelers play their home games in Moline, IL. The team itself is based in Davenport, IA.

RICHMOND SPEED

2000 2001 - 2003

The Speed played their home games in Richmond, VA. The second helmet above was black with no logo.

There are rumors that the Speed will be returning to the league as soon as the 2008 season.

RIO GRANDE VALLEY DORADOS

2004 - present

The Dorados play their home games in Hidalgo, TX.

ROANOKE STEAM

2000 - 2001 2002

The Steam played their home games in Roanoke, VA.

ROCHESTER BRIGADE

2001 - 2003

The Brigade played their home games in Rochester, NY.

The team wore helmets with no logos for at least some games in 2003.

SAN DIEGO RIPTIDE

2002 - 2003 2004 2005

The Riptide played their home games in San Diego, CA. The team was listed as "inactive" for 2006, which more than likely means we have seen the last of the Riptide.

SOUTH GEORGIA WILDCATS / CAPE FEAR WILDCATS

2002 - 2004 2005 - 2006 2007 - present

The Wildcats started out in Fayetteville, NC. In 2005, they moved to Albany, GA.

SPOKANE SHOCK

2006 - present

The Shock play their home games in Spokane, WA.

STOCKTON LIGHTNING

2006 - present

The Lightning play their home games in Stockton, CA.

TALLAHASSEE THUNDER

2000 - 2002

The Thunder played their home games in Tallahassee, FL.

TENNESSEE VALLEY VIPERS

2000 - 2001 2002 - 2004 2006
2007 - present

The Vipers play their home games in Huntsville, AL.

The Vipers left the AF2 in 2005 for the newly formed UIF to play as the Raptors. They have "returned" to the AF2 for 2006. They are technically a new franchise however, using the old monikor.

TEXAS COPPERHEADS

2007- present

The Copperheads play their home games in Cypress, TX, a suburb of Houston. The team played as the Katy Copperheads in the NIFL in 2006. They moved to the Houston area when they joined AF2.

TRI-CITIES FEVER

pre 2007 2007 - present

The Fever play their home games in Kennewick, WA. They played in the NIFL prior to joining the AF2.

When the team announced they were moving to the AF2, they changed their uniforms and helmets. Hence the first helmet shown above. Fans of the team were so upset by the change that ownership soon reversed their decision and went back to the team's former look.

TULSA TALONS

2000 - present

The Talons play their home games in Tulsa, OK.

WICHITA STEALTH

2001 - 2004

The Stealth played their home games in Wichita, KS. The team folded following the 2004 season. I have read they have resurfaced as the Wichita Aviators in the APFL.

The stripe on the helmet was not straight like most helmets, but actually curved and tapered to a point in back.

WILKES-BARRE / SCRANTON PIONEERS

2002 - 2006 2007 - present

The Pioneers play their home games in Wilkes-Barre, PA.

COMMENTS

The AF2 is a farm league for the Arena Football League, a training ground for players and a means to increase it fan-base in smaller markets. The AF2 has simultaneously expanded and lost teams in its three years, as evidenced by the many defunct helmets here.

Contributor John Meyer writes, "The AF2 actually began with the AFL's purchase of the XFL, a proposed indoor league based on the Atlantic southeast coast. The XFL was organized by the owners-operators of a hockey minor league there and planned on playing in their hockey arenas. The AFL, which had been looking into a minor league for some time and which was concerned, not with the PIFL/IPFL, but with the IFL, jump started the AF2 by buying out the hockey owners. They added a few teams of their own and the league was born."

After the first season, the Orlando Predators bought the failing IFL. They added the Peoria Pirates and Lincoln Lightning to the AF2, and dispersed the remaining teams players to the rest of the league. Those teams in the IFL that were not owned by the league ended up in other indoor leagues like the NIFL.

In recent years the league has been in a state of perpetual flux. It seems they lose teams and expand into new markets constantly. For every team that folds, at least one or two are ready to step in and its place.
